Invitation to Apply (ITA) – What You Need to Know

If you're thinking of moving to Canada through Express Entry, getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA) is the first step. This page will help you understand how ITAs work, how to receive one, and what to do after you get one.

What is an Invitation to Apply?

An Invitation to Apply (ITA) is a formal invitation from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) letting eligible candidates who are in the Express Entry pool submit their application for permanent residence in Canada. This is NOT the same as:

  • A Canadian job offer
  • A Provincial Nomination Certificate It's an auto-generated letter sent to candidates who
  • Are in the Express Entry system
  • Have a score that meets or exceeds the cut-off CRS score at the time of the draw When you receive this letter, you are invited to apply for permanent residency in one of Canadian economic immigration programs.

How Do You Qualify for an ITA?

To be in the Express Entry pool, you must:

  • Have at least 67 points under the federal selection system Once you are in the pool, your applications will be ranked with the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which takes into consideration:
  • Core human capital factors (age, education, work experience, language)
  • Factors associated with your spouse or partner (if applicable)
  • Skill transferability
  • Plus additional points for, for example:
    • A valid job offer
    • Provincial nomination
    • Education in Canada
    • French language skills
    • Family in Canada

The IRCC will hold draws and send Canada ITA letters to top-ranked candidates.

How to Increase Your Chances of Getting an ITA

If your CRS score is below the cut-off, here is a list of actions you can take to improve your score.

  • Enhance your language test scores (IELTS or others)
  • Upgrade your educational credentials.
  • Increase your work experience.
  • Look into provincial nomination programs.
  • Get a job offer from a Canadian employer in one of the eligible occupations (NOC TEER O, A, and B)
  • Get extra points for relatives living in Canada.

What Happens Next After You Get the ITA?

When you get your Express Entry Invitation to Apply, here’s what happens next:

  • You will have 90 days to submit the complete application for permanent residency.
  • If you miss the application deadline, the ITA will expire, and you will have to create a new Express Entry profile.
  • If you refuse the ITA, your profile will still be in the pool (as long as it is valid), and you may get picked again in future draws.
